acupressure
[ak-yoo-presh-er] noun:

a type of massage in which pressure on the specific bodily sites described in acupuncture therapy is used to promote healing, alleviate fatigue and sleeplessness, improve circulation...

"I often use the mat in my business, as it is an excellent way to start a massage session, especially if there is a lot of tension. Sometimes you can experience an endorphin high from the acupressure mat, especially when lying on it for the first time but with regular use, you become more relaxed. I usually recommend the mat to people who have sleeping problems, muscle tension, or general pain."

about the acupressure mat

When you first lie down on the shanti® mat, there might be a little discomfort from the 6 210 points. The shanti® acupressure mat is made up of 230 flower nails, each flower nail is made up of 27 points. However, after a few minutes, the discomfort disappears and is replaced by a soothing heat. The blood circulation will start to improve and muscle tension will dissipate. This indicates that the hormones, endorphins and oxytocin, are being released. The shanti® mat is an effective and easy to use acupressure pain relief device. The plastic spines are precisely arranged to best stimulate the body's internal abilities to heal itself. But to start from the beginning...

Qi
Acupressure is the art of indentifying and releasing the congested energy centres making way for a symmetric flow of energy. It involves placing physical pressure on different pressure points on the surface of the body, which can be far distant from the symptom, related by what is called the meridian system, to bring about relief through greater balance and circulation of energies in the body. While pressure is put on the body it helps in removing the blocks and creates energy.
Unlike Western medicine that usually addresses a specific symptom or disease, oriental medicine views the entire body in terms of Qi, its energy. To enjoy good health, we need Qi to flow smoothly throughout the body. If the flow of energy is blocked then acupressure can release Qi to work toward restoring the body's balance. Qi flows through meridians located near the surface of the body. There are 12 main meridians that are linked to specific organs, such as the liver, heart, and kidneys. Pressure points are located on the meridians. When pressure is exerted onto a pressure point, the gate is opened and Qi flows through.

Acupressure promotes a healthy body, mind, and soul, as well as calmness and helping the body to relax. As acupressure is a very powerful technique most ailments are relieved by it. The healing process through acupressure is quite quick and you can feel the energy flow in a matter of a few minutes. The pressure applied on a certain position helps in removing the toxins and makes the blood flow smoothly. Unlike acupuncture, there are no needles used in acupressure, and there are no known side effects. Acupressure is a safe and gentle alternative therapy used to relieve symptoms from many common disorders.

The acupressure mat will work as a form of acupressure.
The shanti® mat is an acupressure mat with inspiration from the Indian mysticism, where the bed of nails was used for relaxation, meditation and inner peace (shanti) to attain perfection of body and mind. Today's spike mat doesn't consist of long nails made of iron on wood, but of 6210 plastic nails on soft cotton.

Pain
Pain is part of the body's warning system, it signals that something is wrong. Sometimes we do not have the time to listen to these signals or we have few options in our lives to change or influence the cause of the pain. Pain may then become a chronic ache. If you have continuous pain for more than three months, you are considered to have a chronic ache.

Stress
Pain and psychological, physical or inflammatory stress increases the body’s production of adrenalin, cortisol and noradrenalin – the body’s stress hormones. However, stress is part of human existence. It disrupts emotional stability, cognitive functioning and even the body's normal physiological activities. A long-term increase in the level of cortisol (more than four hours) impairs the immune response, raises blood pressure and blood sugar level, as well as making us more sensitive to pain. High levels of cortisol also influence metabolism; stomach fat is laid down. People often put on weight when stressed, and often it collects around the stomach. Long term stress, if left unattended, could lead to various physical and psychological illnesses, such as body aches, headaches, depression, anxiety, back pain, muscle tension, aching muscles and joints etc. In addition, the level of oxytocin decreases, causing sexual desire to decline or disappear altogether. When oxytocin levels are reduced, levels of the harmful stress hormones are raised and the vicious circle starts.
The cost of stress in terms of human suffering, social and occupational impairment and illnesses are enormous. Acupressure is one of the most effective methods to cope with, and treat stress related ailments. Besides relieving pain, acupressure can help balance the body by dissolving tensions and stresses that keep it from functioning smoothly and inhibit the immune system. When the blood and bio-electrical energies circulate properly, we have a greater sense of harmony, health, and well-being.
Your muscles can repair and rebuild damaged muscle fibres when at rest. But if you always tense a muscle or area by heavy lifting, computer work, repetitive movements or just during periods of stress and anxiety, the muscles will never get a chance to rest and relax, or the intervals of rest are too few and too far between. This may lead to chronic aches and pain.

Endorphins
There is a natural source of healing power in everyone. Pain or injury to your body alerts your body that help is needed. Acupressure induces the healing response by simulating injury through pressure, the pressure tricks the body into thinking it has been damaged. This triggers the unleashing of endorphins, which are the neurotransmitters that relieve pain and distress in the organs and systems corresponding to that acupressure point, into your blood to help heal the affected area, As a result, pain is blocked, the heart rate increases, blood pressure is altered and the delivery of endorphins and nutrients required for repair is accelerated. The muscle relaxes and this promotes healing. When the flow of blood is enhanced, toxins are flushed away, and oxygen and healing nutrients are provided.

Endorphins are "the feel good hormones", "the natural painkillers", that are usually being released during exercise, sex, and massage. When the body releases endorphins, you become more relaxed and your pain threshold is raised. You get a sense of well-being. Use the shanti acupressure mat whenever your muscles ache or when your joints feel stiff. When your body is relaxed it is better able to heal and recover. Endorphins gives a deep sense of relaxation and allows you to fall asleep more easily and stay asleep.

Oxytocin
Oxytocin is our peace and calm hormone. It is secreted during breast-feeding, massage, meditation, exercise, dancing and so on. When levels of oxytocin rise, the levels of stress hormones in the body fall. Oxytocin makes us socially open, improves our working memory and our self-esteem expressed through the body. Damaged or worn tissues are repaired and new cells grow where they are needed. Our pain threshold is raised, blood pressure falls and worries and anxieties decrease. Sexual desire increases. Large doses of oxytocin make us drowsy. Oxytocin is the body’s own ”happy pill”. By increasing the body’s production of oxytocin, you optimise your body’s performance and durability instead of manipulating it.

Acupressure is the third most popular method for treating pain and illness in the world. This is a proven, natural and cost effective self-care system of home treatment that could improve the quality of your life.
The shanti® mat is beneficial for all ages. Regular use of the shanti mat promotes the release of endorphins and oxytocin and, therefore, helps us to be more relaxed, sleep better and be happier!
